Mike has $20 more than Todd. How much does each have given that combined they have $21 between them. You can’t use fractions in the answer. (Hint: This is a trick question, pay close attention to the condition)
Mike has $20, Todd initially has $21. Todd keeps all his money on the table between them. Hence, now Todd has nothing, Mike has $20 more than Todd, and they have $21 between them i.e on the table between them.

ReplyDeleteUhh, the previous solution is completely wrong.
ReplyDeleteThis can be done really easily using algebra -
Mike = $20 + Todd (1)
Mike + Todd = $21 (2)
Substitute for Mike in equation (2)
$20 + 2*Todd = $21
Todd = $0.50

ReplyDeleteNo fractions.... Okay, one has fifty cents -- the other has fifty cents and twenty dollars.
ReplyDeleteMike = 20 + Todd
ReplyDeleteMike + Todd = 2 * 21
Solving them
Mike = 31
Todd = 11
Mike has $20, and both Mike and Todd has $1 in share. Mike is $20 more than Todd and in total they have $21.
